Editing is often seen as the tough part of writing. That moment when we have to dear our beloved draft apart and somehow put it back together again. But what if editing didn’t have to feel so harsh? What if we approached it with empathy, for ourselves and our stories?

What does it mean to edit with empathy?

To edit with empathy means understanding that your first draft is not a failure. it’s instead, a foundation. It’s proof that you showed up and created something from nothing. Each awkward sentence or wobbly plot point is simply a place where your story is still learning to stand tall.

Some more things about editing with empathy

Start with the big picture before diving into details. Look at the story’s body, its pacing, emotional arcs, and the characters’ journeys. Once you have that nailed down, you can move on to the finer touches. Breaking edits into layers helps you stay focused and kind to yourself.
