For years, Kindle Unlimited felt like the enchanted forest of indie publishing. Full of possibility, discovery, and treasure. Readers got an endless library for one flat fee. Authors got exposure, royalties, and a shot at being discovered by new fans. But lately, something has shifted in the KU kingdom and not in a happily ever after way.

When KU Was Magical

Kindle Unlimited started as a win-win. Readers could binge without breaking the bank. Authors got paid for every page read, a fair, performance-based system that rewarded engaging stories. For many indie authors (including me) KU was a launchpad. It helped build readership and visibility in a crowded market.

The Plot Twist NOBODY Wanted

Fast forward to today and the picture isn’t quite as rosy.

*Payouts are shrinking,

*AI-generated books are flooding KU

*Visibility is harder to get
